what can we say? except what we know some pretty great people. great people that know how to bake some pretty spectacular pies.
we had bite-size pie, pizza pie (the dixon ladies are unstoppable), coconut crust pie, peanut butter pie with chocolate sauce, banana cream pie (a few), chocolate pie, custard pie, a strawberry and a blueberry galette, and on and on and on....
here was our 4th annual pie day in pictures:
thanks to greta for kickin' butt and getting her pie day post up ON Pie Day! way to be an over-achiever greta ;-)
and also to nicole of coastalfamilyliving for her take on pie day.
a million thank-you's to everyone that baked! without you, pie day would be a sad sight.
and those of you that ate and played and colored and visited and jumped rope and shopped... we are grateful.
ps: greta's crack pie was one of the highlights of pie day; she's posted the recipe on her blog. another big hit of the day was bianca's sweet potato pie with homemade whipped cream... hurray!, she's shared the recipe on her blog!

hi. how's the year going for you so far?
for us, so far so good.
we've added two new links to the right hand sidebar: photography and recipes. these links will open new pages that will be dedicated to their titles. we've been posting recipes for a while now, but i've never had a dedicated section for photography; this is my first time really putting it out there... be kind, i'm self-conscious.
we are just starting to add to the new pages, so keep checking in for more recipes and photo's.
hope the rest of your week is great!
so have you checked out the other new-ish links on the sidebar? let's see, there is: shop DECOR, 42nd Prop House, Antoinette jewelry shop, the official m.o.m website, and the official m.o.m on-line shop. sheesh, we're a freakin' conglomorate! go, go forth and click away!

here are some more images from my visit to raleigh.
bbq tray from cooper's in downtown raleigh. it's been there since 1939.
and yes, those are hush-puppies and pork rinds in the center of the table. i asked what a first-timer should try and this is what they brought us. it was gooood. north carolina bbq is vinegar based, not sweet and no heavy sauce. i liked it. the hushpuppies were great; i could have eaten a whole basket.
my cousin sarah ready for some good eats!
award winning!
pork rinds to go!
my first taste.
next up: the north carolina state fair! stay tuned.
also coming: pictures from the hawaiian day we had here in the parking lot saturday. food truck, shave ice, and ukulele playing!
have you ever had pork rinds? how about poke?

i've been playing around with the format of this here blog for the past few days. it's not quite where i want it yet, but i'll be patient (i'll try!). to tell you the truth, typepad gives me a headache; i do not find it user friendly.
what i've done so far is create a new page for food, called let's eat! there is a link to it on the right-hand sidebar. what i really want is a photograph to represent the new page, but all i've figured out is how to make a list. does anyone have pointers on this?
i've also added images to the new 42nd Prop House photo album. it's link is also located in the sidebar. i said yesterday that each listing will have it's day rate listed as well as measurements. one out of two isn't bad -give me some time to get the measurements up. but go ahead and look at our goods; we've got some nice pieces.

i like living in a small beach town.
sitting here in the studio with the big door open (a metal roll up wall), friends wave hello as they walk by.
we have daily sightings of cute surfers and skateboarders (not just boys mind you). we ride our bicycle to pick up lunch, and the nice people at the local café allow us to pay later when we're short on cash. it's the small things.
tomorrow night begins the summer classic car night here in town. on the 3rd thursday of the month (for the next 3 months, i think), hwy 101 will fill up with classic cars and bad retro '50's bands from 5:30 - 7:30. this year will be the first time we will stay open for the event. you see, our shop is at the south end of town -the forgotten end- which of course means it's actually the cool end *wink*. encinitas, finally figured out that it might be good to pay a little attention to our end of town, so there will actually be activity down here tomorrow night - two car clubs and a band. hopefully, this will translate into future customers for us.
when we received the letter from the encinitas downtown mainstreet association with the classic car night announcement, mom and i had to laugh out loud -but totally in a, "we love our little town" kind of way ... here's what it said:
"...special thanks to Stellar Solar for hosting the SMOG Test Only Awards lot, to Charlie's Foreign Car for hosting clubs in their Regent Lot, and to Cardiff Classics for making room for a club and two bands! We now have two music venues: SMOG Test Only and Cardiff Classics! The Small Mall, SofSpra, and The Black Sheep will also host car clubs."
it's just so funny and sweet.
if you haven't any plans thursday night come on out. and don't forget the south end of town, word on the street is it's the coolest.
we've got news: we'd like to share with you a new project we've been working on for the past few months, called 42nd Prop House, we figure we're far enough along in the process that we can start talking about it.
ever since we opened our store, visitors have commented on and asked if they could purchase the furniture we use to merchandise m•o•m products. we've always declined the offers because we need the pieces. well we've changed our minds, slightly.
encinitas and the greater san diego north county has a plethora of photographers, event planners, and prop stylists. a trend we've noticed, thanks to all the photo blogs, is that vignettes are all the rage, and therefore props of all shapes, sizes, and eras are in demand. we've got a nice collection of vintage pieces that will be perfect and we're now making them available to photographers, stylists, and event planners.
the day rates will be posted along with each items photo and measurements. a new page on this blog will be created for 42nd Prop House, for easy access. so check back for that.
these images share but a small glimpse at what is available. shoot us an email if you're interested, we'd be happy to help you create a groovy look. mom (at) 42ndandorange (dot) com.
tomorrow is another instalment of let's eat! we've got a yummy quinoa and chicken salad with peaches for you.

This recipe was inspired by Lemon Peach "Cheesecake" in Kitchen Express by Mark Bittman.
Peachy Goat Cheese
The first time we tried this recipe the mixture came out very rich and thick, like a custard. On our next two consecutive tries, it was more yogurt like, so we made the deconstructed banana split you'll see in a photo below, and used the peachy goat cheese as a sauce. The third time around we made a parfait.
It's got a very tangy bite to it, due to the goat cheese. Hopefully your peaches will be very flavorful and sweet;if not, you'll probably want to add more honey to the mixture.
Ingredients
peaches 2, 3.46 ounces, 196 grams - pitted
freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tsp, 5 grams
honey 2TB, 42 grams
goat cheese (semi soft) 6 ounces, 170 grams
makes 4 servings
Puree peaches, lemon juice, honey, and goat cheese in a Cuisinart or blender. Add more cheese for a thicker consistency (you'll then most likely want to add more honey and perhaps more peaches). Place in ramekins. Drizzle with honey.

We ate this as a dessert/late night snack. It would also be great for breakfast. The taste of pineapple juice made us think of Hawaii.
brown jasmine rice 1 cup, 180g
water 2 cups
coconut milk 15oz, 425g -lite
pineapple juice 8oz, 250g -unsweetened
almonds 1/4c, 23g -raw, sliced
raisins 1/4c, 36g
makes 6 servings
Bring water and rice to a boil, then turn heat down and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally until water is 3/4 absorbed. Add pineapple juice and when it is mostly absorbed add the coconut milk, stir occasionally until mixture is a consistency you like. Garnish with almonds and raisins.
this week has flown by and i'm sorry to report this recipe is all i have to show for it. enjoy.
