play dress up

we have made the first m•o•m dress for girls.
it's a shirt dress with a self-belt, short-sleeves, and raw-edge peter pan collar.  so far we have size tiny 2-4 yrs and small 4-6 yrs, medium and large are in the works.

we've decided that the collar, collar facing, as well as the buttons will be different on each dress. this way we can continue to use fabric and buttons from our vintage collection.

last week or so i told you about the superior dress form we were given in this post. well it's precisely because of that form that we were able to bust this dress out with such ease. we've wanted to make a dress like this for such a long time, but had so many questions about where the waistline was, how long it should be, etc., we had to shelve the idea until we could ask our pattern maker help us out (our bank account was slowing down that process). then along comes this fabulous dress form, a quickie lesson on how to use it from hila, and mom was off and running with it. two days later we had two dresses! we are beyond stoked.

do you like the dress? we need to come up with a name for it -any suggestions? oh and how about the cute little huraches in the picture -so cute; we have three pair at the shop.

small diner apron

one of our colorful diner aprons is in the latest edition of small magazine which is out now.
the small eats section is dedicated to summer grilling and our vintage stripe diner apron fits right in. this was a complete surprise to us, thanks small magazine!

this diner apron is a one-of-a-kind product; however we do have a matching adult apron. so the big girls can be just as fancy as the little girls.

big brother

jet, one of our favorite new friends came by the shop yesterday with his dad. there was so much to catch up on as jet is now a big brother to a little sister born last friday.
congratulations swart family! we can't wait to meet baby b (that's what jet calls her).

jet knows right where our matchbox car collection is. he shared his motorcycle and "helmut guy" with us - it was cool.

we laughed, we danced...

it was all good.
but then again it's always good when jet visits.

a few changes made

last week i closed our online shop. it was a business decision that needed to be made. we've decided to conduct business the old-fashioned way (wink*wink) by email, telephone and in person at our studio. i know, we're wacky.

the 80's revisted

okay as promised, here are some pictures from high school -in the 80's. these are so funny and absolutely fabulous i can't stand it.

okay, this one is so totally rad. it epitomizes the 80's -the hair, the broaches. i'm dying. the girl in this picture is my friend tracy -we are still in touch. i'm not sure if she reads our blog, i will have to email this to her.

all of these photo's were taken by hila. she's my good high school friend that showed up at our studio the other week and gave us this awesome gift; it had been 10 years since we last saw each other.

there are more images from different "photo shoots" we had. i will share them over time, i don't want to force them on you all at once. i think the fumes from the aqua net we used is oozing out of the photographs, i feel light-headed and i have a sudden urge to listen to soft cell.

i am so pleased with these polaroid pictures. the film was 12 years old and i absolutely love all of it's imperfections. the only bummer about last weekend's shoot was that my sister jessica was out of state for a wedding -we'll get her next time.

superior

we were given such a generous gift the other day.

a superior dress form, size 4c.
it's never been used. holy cow, so great!

my dear friend hila, whom i had not seen in over 10 years walked into our studio last week. during our visit she mentioned a child size dress form that she would like to give us; i never expected this.
when she brought it by it was perfectly wrapped in brown paper and tied with brown and blue grosgrain ribbon -absolutely perfect, i should have taken a picture.
because of hila's visit, i searched for and found a box of photo's from high school (the mid 80's) -soooo funny and so great. hila was the photographer back then and she would photograph me and other friends in her clothes (she had the best) and in designs she had made herself. the hair in the photo's is priceless. i will gather my nerve and consider posting some.

a very cute couple

these are new friends and neighbors, jordan and jackie.
how adorable are they?
jordan is one of the designers at libre design / raen optics (about a month ago libre moved in to the space next door to us). jackie works at sushi: a center for the urban arts in san diego.
these two have a keen eye for style and a serious addiction to camera's, specifically polaroid. most of the time, one of them can be seen with a camera in hand or with one hung over a shoulder. the day of this visit was no exception.

our pre mother's day portraits were livened when these two showed up with a literal trunk full of props. you can see pictures of the day below.

saturday was a lot of fun.
people stopped by to have their portrait taken, ask what was going on, and some just slowed down and stared as they drove by....hiya!

we're already thinking about father's day and are nearly set on doing this all over again. we'll let you know what we decide.

besides sharing behind the camera duties with siobhan, and being in front of the camera (i have a mother too), i also got some "behind the scenes" shots.
